by wine legend Rodney Strong in 1959,
Windsor Vineyards is America's oldest and largest direct to consumer winery. It all
started in a little Victorian in Tiburon, California, where customers
frequently asked the Strong to reserve a wine for them. As the business
grew, he began writing their names directly on the wine labels. This
"message on a bottle" caught on, and thus began the tradition.
Like all great marketing concepts, it had its origins in an authentic reason
- the need to keep wine for various customers separate and available for
just them. As the United States' first mail order winery, Windsor Vineyards
pioneered winery sales direct to consumers through its catalog and extensive
outbound marketing and consulting operations. Windsor also developed a
successful business with its tasting room in Tiburon, California. In 1989,
the Klein family purchased Windsor Vineyards and placed great emphasis on
investing in barrels, vineyards and technology, with the goal of making some
of California's finest wines. The efforts paid off, as Windsor has been
among the top three most award-winning wineries in the U.S. In 2005 alone, they won 372 medals for their superb wines, 68 of them
Gold, Best of Class, or Sweepstakes. Their 2005 Sauvignon Blanc was named
Sweepstakes winner as the best white wine at the San Francisco International
Wine Competition. Their wines have been served at three Presidential
Inaugurals, as well as given as business gifts by some of the largest and
most prestigious companies in America. This success attracted the attention
of Australia's Mildara Blass, which purchased Windsor Vineyards in early
2000 and has added it to its family of international wine holdings under the
umbrella of Beringer Blass Wine Estates. According to Wine & Spirits
Magazine, "Windsor has defied all odds in successfully carrying a massive
portfolio of wines that are of uniformly high quality - and none of which
